Do you still need a personal photo site with Gallery 3?

I have a pictures web site, which is hosted on Dreamhost. The programe is Gallery. I used Gallery 2 before. Later I upgraded it to Gallery 3.

The main purpose to establish this personal photo site is that I want to share the pictures with my family around the world. Actually some in USA, some in main land China.  When I first make the site, I made a decision, I do not want to put the pictures on the third party web site. I want the full control of my own photos.

Now, more and more pictures we take every day. We can use Android phone to take the pictures. We can use Nikon Coolpix L22 to take the pictures. We can even use iPad mini to take pictures. And the resulotions of the pictures is much higher than those 5, or 6 years ago. File size is much bigger.

To organized them and put all in one place is very hard and takes more time. If I still use the way I used before to put them into Gallery 3 program, it will take me a lot of time to do it.

So I have a change. It is a change based on the current technology.

When upload photos to Gallery 3.0.2, most of time I will see some errors. About 30% pictures can not be uploaded.
The Gallery 3.0.2 is running on Dreamhost hosting plan.
The error code is 2038.
Based on the official support page of Gallery3.
2038
Some servers have simultaneous upload limitations.
To overcome this; login, Click Admin -> Settings -> Advanced
Change the gallery simultaneous_upload_limit to 1 and save.
After changing the settings, the upload has no problem, but slow.
Slow is better than error.

Add Rebuild Items modules for Gallery 3

The Gallery 2 import is good to transfer all photos from old, Gallery 2, to Gallery 3. But sometimes the thumbnail is not converted completed. Some photos thumbnail are missing.
So, I installed Rebuild Items module.

Gives the administrator the ability to rebuild items (thumbs and re-sizes) as well as EXIF data. It marks the items in the database as ‘dirty’ and Gallery will then attempt to fix those items that are marked as dirty.

Install Gallery

Do you want your own Web Gallery, or Web Photo Albums. Check Gallery. It is a Open Source program
I use a one-click-installation feature of DreamHost to install this service for my Grace’s site. The album is private site, no more public view.
Why I choose this photo album organizer?
You know I setup a Blog for my Grace powered by WordPress. It has a Gallery plugin can connect this Gallery with WordPress.
WPG2.
The features of WPG2 shown as below:
* Gallery 2 Images, Videos, Albums (displays the Album Highlight Image) can be displayed in Blog Entries
* Random, Recent, Daily, Weekly, Popular Images, Albums can be displayed as image blocks in the WordPress Sidebar
* Management of Gallery2 users, secured by WordPress User Roles and Capabilities
* Automatic logging in of WordPress Users into Gallery2
* Displaying Gallery2 Output within a WordPress Page
It looks powerful.
I upload the photos on her own Album location.
She login the WordPress, pickup a photo, and write something about it.
It is easy for her and for us.
