How to apply Gmail Filter with two or more email address

I use GMail filters to keep all the emails I get from different stores flyer under their own labers.

To make a filter in GMail that handles more than one address, you can separate the addresses with a vertical bar – ‘|’, but not a comma.

Home@canada.dell.com | dell@dellhome.usa.dell.com

Or you can follow GMail’s help advice, and put them all in parenthesis, with an OR between addresses.

(Home@canada.dell.com OR dell@dellhome.usa.dell.com)

The OR technique doesn’t seem to work without the parens, while the vertical bar does…

Make your Gmail more safe

As we know, official Google blog give a post said it get attack from China. It means from China Gov.
This attack tried to access the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists. I do not think it is just for these person. If they can do it to them, them may do it to you in future.
They has no limitation. No rule.
OK, to play safe. We have to try our best to protect our own property. Including emails and any visible or invisible property.
Google can let you use https to connect Gmail account.

HTTPS encryption keeps your mail secure as it travels between your web browser and Gmail servers, so someone sharing your favorite coffee shop’s public wifi can’t maliciously read it. Banks and credit card companies use this same protocol to keep your online accounts safe. To protect your Gmail account, we’ve turned on the option to “always use HTTPS” for everyone. This added layer of security can make Gmail slower, so if you don’t use unencrypted wireless connections, you can choose to disable this option in your account Settings. Even if you change this setting, Gmail will always encrypt the login page to protect your password.

It is an option, but I STRONGLY suggest you to use HTTPS connection.

phpBB3 Email settings with Gmail or Google Apps

I did a post one year ago for PHPBB2 and Gmail. Now I have a PHPBB 3.0.4.
How to config phpBB 3 forum board to make its email setting working with Gmail or Google Apps?
The old way does not work. How can I do?
I find a way to use Gmail smtp facility to send out email.

1) Have the Gmail or Goolge Apps’s email account works.
2) Using the menu at the top right edge of the main Gmail window (the one that shows up after you log in), click on Settings, and then Forwarding and POP / IMAP. Under POP Download, click either Enable POP for all Mail, or Enable POP for Mail that Arrives Now (which ever suits your purpose). Configure anything else that appeals to you too. Exit from the Gmail Settings Window after saving your selections (this is important).

Stop cron emails at Dreamhost

I have some site on the Dreamhost. To monitor the traffic and performance, I have Awstats on site and runing many cron jobs every day. I have the experience of how to install AwStats on the Ubuntu server.
The cron job is runing well on the Dreamhost server. The problem is I will receive tons of email about the job status.
Actually, I don’t need these emails. If the job is completed successfully, the Awstats report should be updated. I checked the report often. So the fail of job is not my concern.
To disable cron emails, just add one line code as shown below:
First SSH server.

$ crontab -e

add this line to the top of your cron file:

MAILTO=””

That’s simple. No more cron emails coming.

phpBB Email settings with Gmail

I run a BBS, which is phpBB. I also use the Google Apps’ email service. How to make them work together?
Let’s discuss it now.
Version of phpBB2: 2.0.22
It is running on the Dreamhost‘s hosting.
There is a email setting under General Admin > Configuration
Say, I want to use a Gmail account as the BBS system email account. The Google Apps’s email is same as Gmail setting.
Let’s put the details here.
3) Login the phpBB administrator panel.
Goto General Admin > Configuration > Email Settings

SMTP Server Address:ssl://smtp.gmail.com:465
SMTP Username: enter your email address
SMTP Password: enter the password of your email account.

After that, the email setting is fine on your phpBB system. Any emails through the system email account will be OK. I enable account activation, which requires new users verify his email address.

Add SPF record for Google Apps for your Domain

I mentioned before, I use Google Apps for your domain as one email service of my sites.
Email service switch is very smooth.
And user interface is same as Gmail, friendly.
One issue found. I send an email to an email address ended by 163.com.
The Delivery Status Notification (Failure) message said:
Technical details of permanent failure:
PERM_FAILURE: SMTP Error (state 8): 550 MI:SPF mx20,wKjR5bDbf6h9JaNFxfU9DA==.29331S5 1168320069 http://mail.163.com/help/help_spam_16.htm
The error code is 550 MI:SPF
That means the IP address of sender is not included in sender’s Domain list.
To check the SPF record, go here.
I checked Google help, the answer is here.
How do I set my SPF records?

Sender Policy Framework (SPF) records allow domain owners to specify which hosts are permitted to send email on behalf of their domains, making it hard to forge From: addresses. We strongly encourage you to publish SPF records for your domain — having these records in place will ultimately help fight spam.
To set your domain’s SPF record, publish the following TXT record on the DNS resource: v=spf1 include:aspmx.googlemail.com ~all.
