Today, I upgraded about 5 sites through Dreamhost One-Click installation facility.

It is simply to me to upgrade them.
I click upgrade, and sit to wait the confirm email.

Only do something when I get the confirmation of finish upgrading.

No hands wet. No uploading, downloading.

The program I used through Dreamhost One-Click installation are WordPress, Gallery, phpBB, and Joomla!.

Gmail has theme now

Looks beautiful when I launch my Gmail yesterday afternoon.
There are over 30 themes.

Google is rolling out this new feature to all Gmail users. In the future, Google Apps will have too, I guess.

phpBB 3.0.3 released

The new phpBB 3.0.3 released Nov. 12, 2008.

It is a bug fixing release and also give two major new features.
template inheritance and a post-based queue.

How to progect your WiFi

Let's discuss the most important eight steps to protect your WiFi connection.

1) Don't use default SSID

2) Change the SSID to something that does not identity your business or location.

3) Use a boring name for SSID, something like network5 or ntdile09ldk.

4) Change access point's default IP and admin password.

5) Use WPA rather than WEP.

6) Change encryption key often, once or twice every month.

7) Restrict network connections to network clients with specified MAC addresses.

8) Do not broadcast your SSID.

And the last not the least step is to use wired connection if possible.

Server Upgrade and Database moveing

Last weekend, the server which I put my Blog on, is upgraded based on the Dreamhost schedule.

The new server is 64bit, and Linux is 64bit too.

SO I have to rebuild my customized PHP on it, and doing a lot of extension upgrade too.

Later I found I can not add new database and use the existing mysql host.
There is no option of "Use Hostname".
I have to ask for upgrading databse too.

Today,they moved my MySQL database from alvin:ruano to my main MySQL server: lingling:myler.

Improve VOIP traffic in WRT54G

Requirement:
WRT54G Router,
DD-WRT 24 Sp1 firmware.

To improve VOIP traffic in the network, I put VOIP adapter mac address into the QoS features.
* Under 'MAC Priority', enter the MAC Address of the device
* Click 'add'
* click 'Save changes'

I put my SPA-2002 VOIP adapter at Premium priority.

After one week using, I fell the VOIP telephone/ conversion has better quality without jiggly.

Got a Linksys WRT54G router

I have a D-Link WBR1310. After two months usage, I found it is not suitable for my network environment.

The features are so limited. I need a powerful router will tons of advanced settings.

OK. I bought a Linksys WRT54G router last week. It is a discontinued product. I got one from the Office Depot, Vancouver Store.
Just because it is a discontinued product, it is only $40.

It is v8 edition.
CPU 240 MHz, Memory 8 MB, Flash memory 2 MB
Broadcom BCM5354KFBG Chipset with non-replaceable antennas.

I upgrade this device to the latest Linksys official firmware. Then I installed DD-WRT firmware to make it better.

WiFi Channel choice

WiFi IEEE 802.11b has a very limited channel (depend on country). In vary pack area with many WiFi Access point not all channel can be use at the same time. In North America, US State and Canada only Channels 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 and 11 are available for usage. In Europe Channel 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12 and 13 can be use. In Japan only Channel 14 available for usage. The usage of each channel depend on country policy.

WiFi with base protocol IEEE 802.11b used Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) Modulation, which mean spectrum width for each usage is 22MHz wide for each station. This mean a station with 2437MHz Channel will be working on frequencies range of 2426MHz to 2448MHz. It will interfere 2 channel below and up of its channel. So effectively only 3 channel can be used without interfering each other which is Channel 1 , 6 and 11.
