January 2007 Archives

Can you imaging this server, which hosts about 5 sites, has only 512 MB?

I add one piece of memory in it. 512MB memory with Samsung chips.

I bought a Azenram 512MB PC3200 184-Pin DDR Memory last week. It cost me 79.99 - 10 instant rebate and 30.00 mail-in rebate. Sounds good.

The answer is no. I can not make it work together with existing 512MB memory, which is Samsung brand.

I have to return it at FutureShop

Then go to a small computer parts store in Crystal Mall. This time I am looking for the same brand or same chips memory. They have some.

Finally I choose this, $59.99 plus tax.
I installed it and it works well. Now this server has 1024MB memory. I fell the speed, respond time, increased about 50%. It is my personal feeling.

Binary Clock with Red Lights

Do you know this Clock?
POWER2-CLOCK-RED-unit.jpg

Even I know it is a clock, I can not read it.
It is a Binary Clock. So cool.

Tell time in hi-tech style with this incredible Powers of 2 BCD Clock! It uses the binary code (the language of computers) to indicate the time. After a few minutes of practice, you'll be able to tell the time by simply adding the values of the red lights in each column. This compact unit is not a typical light show, it's actually a working clock!
Here is a guide tells you how to read a Binary clock.

Maxtor 200GB Harddisk

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

You may be noticed that this Blog can not be accessed yesterday. It is caused by hard disk failure.

The old SATA It is just passed one year. Based on the original one year warranty. This drive is out of warranty.
The quality control is so good. Maxtor said it is one year warranty. Disk failure happened when I use it about 380 days.

Ok, let me take a look at this new disk.
I have no time to shop around. Just go to FutureShop to catch this one.
I paid $124 including tax.

Maxtor 200GB 7200RPM Ultra Series Hard Drive Kit
Average Seek Time is 9.3ms, Data Buffer is 8 MB

Some strange thing is here.
The warranty period shown on Future Shop's website is 1 year, and the label on the box.
I go to Maxtor website. Their warranty service page shown as below:

Maxtor retail-packaged products purchased on or after October 1, 2006 will carry the following Maxtor Standard Worldwide Warranty.

3 years warranty for ATA/SATA Internal Hard Drive Kits on North America

But, when I enter the s/n to check the warranty period here, it shows me one year only.

Finally I got it. Maxtor is now bought by Seagate. The most important notice is:

As of December 9th, 2006 warranty services for all Maxtor products are now fully supported through Seagate’s warranty services. To obtain warranty support for your product please proceed to the Seagate Warranty Support page for assistance.

What about AdBrite

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

I received one cheque from AdBrite the end of last month. The payment is for one 300 x 250 pixel Medium Rectangle ad inserted in each individual post of this Blog.

The return is so bad. And the payment above is for all earning until October 27. They use net-60 payment:

Net-60 means earnings must mature for at least 60 days before being eligible to be paid out. In other words, 60 days after we get paid by the advertiser, the publisher gets paid.

Just show you the cheque.

My suggestion is that you can choose it, but nor relay on it.
If you do not have other program to earn some Blog money, or you have some space on your Blog, you can try it.

A lot of readers may be noticed that some ads are displayed on this blog.
One of them are provided by Text Link Ads. I put it on the right side of the Home page and the middle of every individual archive post.

Last month, December 2006, I sold one link through it. They put one text link on this Blog from 12 to 31. I got $8.02 by Paypal. Look at the payment history below,
text-link-ads-payment.jpg

The payment turn around is about two days.
Compared with the Adbrite's net-60 payment plan, and Google's net-30, it is very very fast.

Just click the like below to apply for it. You may qualify for this program and earn some money for your Blog cost. This money is enough to pay your Domain, hosting and a cup of coffee.

I mentioned before, I use Google Apps for your domain as one email service of my sites.

Email service switch is very smooth.
And user interface is same as Gmail, friendly.

One issue found. I send an email to an email address ended by 163.com.
The Delivery Status Notification (Failure) message said:
Technical details of permanent failure:
PERM_FAILURE: SMTP Error (state 8): 550 MI:SPF mx20,wKjR5bDbf6h9JaNFxfU9DA==.29331S5 1168320069 http://mail.163.com/help/help_spam_16.htm

The error code is 550 MI:SPF

That means the IP address of sender is not included in sender's Domain list.
To check the SPF record, go here.

I checked Google help, the answer is here.

How do I set my SPF records?

Sender Policy Framework (SPF) records allow domain owners to specify which hosts are permitted to send email on behalf of their domains, making it hard to forge From: addresses. We strongly encourage you to publish SPF records for your domain -- having these records in place will ultimately help fight spam.

To set your domain's SPF record, publish the following TXT record on the DNS resource: v=spf1 include:aspmx.googlemail.com ~all.

Bug on Google Reader

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

I use Google Reader every day.

google-reader-bug.jpg

Look, the red 1, 2, and 3 all point that I have 7 new items. The 4 tells me:

Your reading list has no unread items.

I do have no new items in my list. Even I chose show all, and go through every item. I saw they are all gray. That means read already.
I try to refresh the Firefox, or restart the Firefox. Not work. I use Firefox 2.0.0.1, the latest version of Firefox.

I tried it under IE 6. Same.

This is a bug of Google Reader.
If you have same problem, let me tell you how to solve it.

Some new changes of Blogs

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

If you read my previous post, you may find the font of the watermark on pictures is changed. I chose Braddon in 2007 as below.
font-braddon.jpg

I improve my spam comments control. Any comments without correct security code, will be removed directly.

I applied for Google Apps for Your Domain almost one year ago, but I don't use it. Now I decided to replace my email server to Gmail included in Google Apps. It is very smooth when I changed my email service.

Some small fine-tune of this Blog will be implemented later.

Some Google fans may already knew that Gmail can retrive email from your other email account by POP3, such as your Yahoo email account or your ISP email account.

Not everyone can access this feature. It is open to the limited Gmail users.

I have Gmail account for years. Today I saw this feature in my Gmail account settings page.

They call it Mail Fetcher.

Let's go through the whole steps to add one account:

0) Login you Gmail account.
1) Click Settings from the top of any Gmail page.
2) Click Accounts.
3) In the Get mail from other accounts section, click Add another mail account.
gmail-setting-email-fetch.jpg

If you do not see this section as above, you can not fetch email through Gmail. You have to wait until you can access this part.
