Now you can use your VOIP service to make and receive telephone calls even when you're out of the office, with SIP CPE Sources' FX-200 VoIP Port Converter.

The majority of the 1 and 2 port gateways and analog terminal adapters on the market are not configured with an FXO or Line port. With the FX200, you can use "Transit In" and "Transit Out" functions with your gateway or analog terminal adaptor in conjunction with your VOIP service.

For my parents in Shanghai, I think it is better to buy it and send the adapter to them. Connect it to the high speed internet and plug the regualar phone set.
I can call them with (604) area code to them as a local phone call.
This is a way I will use it. Another one is I use it instead of my currently Telus phone service.
Their rate is cheaper than that of Telus.

This is from Fierce VOIP

The foundation of VoIP networks and VoIP technology is a set of protocols called H.323. These protocols were established by the Telecommunications Sector of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T). H.323 specifies components, protocols, and procedures for real-time point-to-point and multipoint multimedia communication over packet-based networks. It also sets interoperability guidelines for communication between H.323-enabled networks and other conferencing standards.

Defination of VOIP

From Vonage

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a reliable technology for transmitting ordinary telephone calls over your internet connection using packet linked routes, also called IP Telephony . Internet Protocol involves the transmission of telephone calls over a data network like the Internet that can reach any telephone on the public-switched telephone network (PSTN).

From WIKIPEDIA

Voice over IP (also called VoIP, IP Telephony, and Internet telephony) is the routing of voice conversations over the Internet or any other IP network. The voice data flows over a general-purpose packet-switched network, instead of the traditional dedicated, circuit-switched voice transmission lines.

From Encarta Reference

Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) is a method for making telephone calls over the Internet by sending voice data in separate packets, just as e-mail is sent. Each packet is assigned a code for its destination, and the packets are then reassembled in the correct order at the receiving end. Recent technological improvements have made VOIP almost as seamless and smooth as a regular telephone call.
